Max Verstappen masterfully clung onto the race lead on the opening lap in Suzuka, despite a strong challenge from championship leader Lando Norris.
With the track still drying out from earlier rain, the Dutchman and his McLaren rival started the 53-lap race angled towards each other on the grid as both hoped to take P1, but Verstappen fended off Norris well.

There were no changes in the top 10, but further down the field Fernando Alonso passed the Alpine of Pierre Gasly, with the two battling throughout the first lap.
New Red Bull man Yuki Tsunoda also managed to overtake Racing Bull's Liam Lawson, who the home favourite replaced at the top team ahead of this weekend.
