'I let down the team' – Norris apologises to McLaren for Singapore Sprint intra-team clash
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri came together on the final lap of the Sprint in Singapore.
Lando Norris admits that "I let down the team" and has apologised to McLaren for his clash with team mate Oscar Piastri during the Singapore Sprint.
The reigning World Champion dived to the inside of his team mate on the final lap of Saturday's 100km dash around the streets of Marina Bay as they battled for fourth, with the pair spinning after colliding at Turn 5.
Norris recovered to P8 as Piastri retired, with the Briton in a bullish mood immediately after the Sprint, claiming that "it was a big gap, I went for it, I have the right to do that".
Norris would eventually finish fourth in Sunday's Grand Prix, but admitted after the main event that he had taken responsibility for the incident, which the stewards deemed a racing incident and left McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella "disappointed".
"I can't attempt what I did, I should never have attempted it in the first place, even if the move was on," said Norris.
"I simply have to think more about the team that I represent more than myself. It was a mistake on my part, I let down the team. I've also apologised to all of them and I owe them all an apology and we'll do better next time."
Having fallen behind Kimi Antonelli in his battle for third during the Grand Prix, Norris asked the team over the radio if he could help Piastri behind, the Australian having had to make a second pit stop due to a puncture.
Piastri was able to finish directly behind his team mate after a penultimate lap overtake on Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari, with Norris keen to rectify for the collision the day before.
"Oscar was unfortunate with a puncture," said Norris. "I also had a few problems with the car myself, so there was more of an opportunity to get more points to get Oscar back up the order than there was for me to catch Kimi.
"And I saw there were like three or four cars between, so I asked but I didn't need to in the end. We still got the best points we could as a team."
