George Russell claimed a shock win in the Austrian Grand Prix after a dramatic, late collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris sent both drivers tumbling down the order.
Russell had followed Verstappen and Norris for the majority of Sunday’s race at the Red Bull Ring, but a slow pit stop from Red Bull allowed the McLaren driver to close in and attack for the lead.
Norris had already attempted a move on several occasions when he dived up the inside of Verstappen at Turn 3 on Lap 64 of 71, only for the pair to make contact and both pick up punctures.
While Verstappen salvaged fifth after a pit stop, Norris crawled back to his garage and was forced to retire due to the damage sustained, clearing the path for Russell to take the win over Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz.
At the start of the race, Piastri had clashed with Charles Leclerc at Turn 1 and then with Sergio Perez at Turn 4 – the Ferrari driver forced to pit for repairs as a result.
There were also five-second penalties for Perez and Lewis Hamilton due to respective pit lane speeding and pit entry transgressions, while Fernando Alonso took a 10-second sanction for thumping Zhou Guanyu’s car.
