HIGHLIGHTS: Watch all the key moments from a dramatic qualifying session in Monaco
Charles Leclerc pulled off a brilliant pole position for his home Grand Prix at Monaco – before crashing out in Q3, which prevented anyone else from bettering his time.
The Monegasque had been quick all weekend, finishing Thursday practice top of the time sheets, and he underlined that pace again on Saturday by nailing a lap good enough for pole, before crashing on his final run in Q3, which ended the session early – just as Max Verstappen was on a very quick lap behind him.
Lelcerc now faces an anxious wait to see whether he has damaged his car enough to incur a grid penalty for Sunday's race.
Meanwhile Mercedes had their trickiest session of the year with Valtteri Bottas third-fastest, but Lewis Hamilton down in seventh on a track where overtaking is notoriously difficult.
