George Russell stayed clear of the drama that ensued behind as he romped to his maiden F1 victory, and bagged his Mercedes team’s first win of the 2022 season, in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
It was a hugely dramatic start to Sunday’s race, with Kevin Magnussen and Daniel Ricciardo colliding on the first lap, before Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, along with Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc, clashed at the restart.
But there was no such trouble for Russell, who made a perfect start to the 71-lap encounter and confidently pulled away up front, before managing a late Safety Car restart to lead home the recovering Hamilton in a Mercedes one-two.

Carlos Sainz completed the podium positions, followed by Ferrari team mate Charles Leclerc, Alpine’s Fernando Alonso and the Red Bulls of Verstappen and Sergio Perez – Verstappen pitting for a new front wing and earning a five-second penalty after his attempted move on Hamilton.
