Charles Leclerc took a crowd-pleasing second win of the season at Ferrari’s home Grand Prix, nursing his tyres until the very end to cross the line ahead of a disheartened McLaren pair.
After Oscar Piastri took the lead from pole-sitter Lando Norris on the opening lap, the race was dictated by tyre management and last-minute strategy choices that saw McLaren lose what looked to be a certain victory.
A late pitstop by the Australian on Lap 39 saw him fall behind one-stoppers Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, and despite pushing until the end, he was only able to improve back up to P2.
Meanwhile, Norris was forced to fight back past championship leader Max Verstappen and Sainz to finish on the final step of the podium as a second tyre change dropped the Dutchman back to P6.
Lewis Hamilton took fifth place for Mercedes while his team mate George Russell suffered car damage on his way to finish P7, with Sergio Perez slotting in behind him. Rounding out the top 10, Alex Albon passed Kevin Magnussen on the final lap for P9 as rookie Franco Colapinto had an impressive debut to cross the line in P12.
